Suzanne Walters

Director of Music for Sanctuary Services
E-mail Suzanne Walters

How long have you been in the ministry? I have been teaching public school music for 30 and a half years, and have been involved in church music in some capacity for about the same length of time. In my previous church, I had sung in the senior choir, directed the senior choir, directed the children’s music, taught music for vacation bible school, formed, led, and played for the Praise Team in order to create a contemporary/blended service, and filled in on piano to play the liturgy for the traditional service.
Tell me about your family… I grew up on the west side of Cleveland, in a suburb called Fairview Park, and moved to Stark County in 1989. I met my husband, Brian, while we both were singing with the Canton Symphony Chorus. We have been married over 25 years, and live in Jackson Township. Our daughter, Kelly, lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our son, Kevin, graduated from The University of Akron with a degree in Music Education. Our younger son, Casey, is a senior at Jackson High School, he plans to enlist in the United States Navy following graduation. We also have a golden retriever named Shiloh.
What are your hobbies/recreational interests? Most of my time is spent with music, but I also enjoy working out, entertaining, shopping, baking, traveling, and reading. Spending time with my family, especially summer evenings sitting outside on the porch or fall evenings sitting around the fire ring, are especially cherished times. The Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday times with my family are the most precious times of my life.
What is your favorite quote? “If I can keep one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain; if I can help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.” – Emily Dickinson
What was your first job? I started babysitting neighbor kids when I was ten years old. But my first official job was as a cashier at Rini’s Stop-n-Shop grocery store. This was before scanners were used, so everything was rung up on a cash register. Having lots of piano experience enabled my fingers to move fast!
What is your proudest moment? Watching my children graduate from high school and college, and I anticipate watching my son be sworn into the Navy will be right up there.
What was your childhood ambition? I always wanted to be a teacher and a mom!
What inspires you? Watching people learn, and perhaps playing a part in their learning, is incredibly inspiring to me.
What has God been teaching you lately? God has taught me many times to not try to plan my life; to keep my eyes open for opportunities rather than trying to force things to happen. God’s timing is perfect; mine is not.
What is your guilty pleasure? Too much wasted time on Facebook!
What is your favorite part of your job? ?  I am a people person, and my jobs have always been about interacting with people, which I love. But watching students/learners make connections – the proverbial “lightbulb” going on – is definitely the best.

Sandy Simpson

Church Organist
E-mail Sandy Simpson

How long have you been in the ministry? I have been involved in the music ministry in some capacity since middle school, most of my life as an organist. I was on the praise team at Church of the Lakes for several years, then became the organist in 2013.
Tell me about your family… I have two sons, CJ and Alex, and a daughter Lindsay. Alex lives in Canton. Lindsay, her husband, Keith, and their daughters, Stevie, Brooklyn and Kallie live in Bolivar. CJ, his wife, Rachel, and their daughters, Zoe and Ella, live in Plain Township.
What are your hobbies/recreational interests? Reading, walking, gardening and cooking.
What is your favorite quote? Matthew 25:3-40: “Then the righteous will answer Him saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feel You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or, when did we see You sick or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these, My brethren, you did it to me.'”
What was your first job? Working at a candy counter in a movie theater.
What is your proudest moment? A classmate of my son, Alex, was scheduled to speak to the Board of Education on behalf of a high school teacher who many students felt was treated unfairly. The day of the board meeting, my son’s classmate heard there was going to be a large crowd, feared the repercussions and opted out. Alex, who was extremely shy at the time, stretched well beyond his comfort zone and delivered an inspiring speech. I am proud to have a son with the courage to stand up for his beliefs and overcome his fears.
What was your childhood ambition? To be a composer and to have a house full of children.
What inspires you? Relationships, nature and the arts.
What has God been teaching you lately? Patience.

Director of Contemporary Worship
E-mail Tony Walsh

How long have you been in the ministry? I officially started working in ministry in 2016. I began as a worship leader at Copley UMC, and after 6 months became their youth minister. What was your first job? When I was 14 I mowed lawns for a few congregants. In high school I worked at a local K-Mart as a cashier.
What is your proudest moment? This is a difficult question. On one hand, there have been multiple experiences where I have felt proud of myself. Some of those moments consisted of personal achievement or reaching a goal of some sort. On the other hand, I think that my own feelings of proudness are most acute when I feel it for another.
What was your childhood ambition? Truthfully, I wanted to be a professional skydiver.
What inspires you?Seeing transformation in others and within myself. Throughout my life I have seen many people be transformed through a relationship with Christ. When witnessing this first hand, I internally feel the joy of the Lord, and am inspired to continue to work diligently with perseverance in order to possibly be an instrument of this change to others.
What has God been teaching you lately? God has been teaching me a number of different lessons lately. I believe an ongoing lesson that He will continue to be teaching me is how to give total control of my life over to Him. Each of us have moments or areas of our lives where we will struggle to give Him control or truly make Him Lord. It is a daily task to remain centered on Christ and allow Him to lead us. I believe that God is inviting me to cultivate a trust and faith in Him, and thus a deeper relationship with Him, so that my character would ultimately resemble that of Christ.
What is your guilty pleasure?Sleeping in? Does that count?
What is your favorite part of your job? There are many aspects of my job that I enjoy. Making music that glorifies God is a large part of it. However, I think my favorite part is seeing others worship God loudly and joyfully through music.

What is your favorite quote? “Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.  It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.  Every morning a lion wakes up and knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.  It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle… when the sun comes up, you’d better be running”   Motivational Quote

What is your guilty pleasure?  I enjoy a lot of things, but don’t feel much guilt over them!
What is your favorite part of your job?  I love the people I work with and the people of the congregation.  The kids in the child care center are pretty awesome as well, if they can’t brighten your day nothing can.
